Puppy, NDNH, Novice & Veteran – 5th July 2026 held at Geoff Saints

“A very drizzly start to the day soon turned into the perfect weather, in which to hold our last test of the season at Geoff Saints Training Ground at Haighton, near Preston.
We were there by very kind permission of our wonderful host, Geoff Saint, who always goes above and beyond to accommodate our club, and we really appreciate it.
Thank you so much to our lovely Judges – Nigel Barton, Tula Lowe, Scott Marland and Lisa Marson who all judged very fairly and gave great feedback to the competitors, quite a few of which are only starting out on their Gundog journey.
We’d like to thank our fabulous sponsors, for today and all season, for providing our winners with an array of gifts – AK Gundog Accessories, Salubrious Dog Food with Neil Appleton (Applebriar Gundogs), Mandy Berrisford of Red Hall Farm Gundog Training Facility and Ariat with distributors Malmo Guns. Thank you also to John & Nina Halsted for sponsoring our Novice Dog/Novice Handler event – the award winners each received a HGA Rosette with the winner receiving a months free membership to the “Halsted Gundog Academy”.
Once again our army of helpers came out to support us by throwing, placing and stewarding, and we can’t thank you all enough, as we know it’s not easy to get help these days. In addition to our stalwart committee members, John Lupton, Laila Curtis-Noonan, Nigel McIlroy, Sadie Faulkner and Helen Steele (who also bakes exceedingly nice cakes).
We at Pennine firmly believe that the strength of a club is down to the strength of its committee members and speaking as “Club Secretary” I can’t stress enough how proud I am of our committee. Everyone pulls together, both at events and by much liaising behind the scenes on how we can improve, bouncing about ideas and our obligatory trips to a pub after the tests to discuss how the day has gone (any excuse ). This year has been a huge success, our events have run like clockwork and in the main our competitors have given great feedback on what enjoyable days out with us they’ve had, and how much they’ve enjoyed our well thought out tests, venues and training days. Of course you always get the odd moan (such is life) but our aim is to try and please the majority, and I think we’ve achieved that, so WELL DONE PENNINE COMMITTEE – hope you’re all ready for the big plans we have next year
Our Chief Steward, Andy Hall, as always, did a brilliant job and thanks also to Christine & Peter Thompson for everything they do and for bringing all the equipment to our events.
Committee members in attendance today, and who worked their socks off were – Mark Palmer, Andy Hall, Mick Kay, Gary Collier, Kim Howlett, Julie Hunter, Franny Guatella, Robbie Gilmore, Tracy Langstreth and Peter& Christine Thompson.
Pennine love to encourage new and young handlers to our sport, and yesterday we awarded a special “Young Handler” award to Max Thornton who competed in our NDNH category with his lovely dog Skye. Max is only 10 years old, handled like a pro and achieved a very creditable 70/80 points. Well done Max, we hope to see you at our tests next year
Thank you to all who brought food yesterday. We hope that our buffet was enjoyed by everyone.
Also, thank you so much to our parent club – The Northern Golden Retriever Association (NGRA) who support us in everything we do.

The next major event for Pennine is at the “Chatsworth Country Fair” in September, when our 3 team members will be defending their winners trophy, in the Interclub Team Challenge, from last year. Should any of our club members be at the fair, please come and say hello. You will usually find us sat on “Gundog Hill”. It’s a fabulous, fun filled, 2 day event which is very well organised by our great friends, and Pennine/NGRA members, Steve & Cath Burns and is one not to be missed if you like watching fab dog work and buying lots of Gundog gear in the show itself.
We will also be organising some training days when our batteries are recharged, so keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page for dates and venues.
Phew! That was a long one
Thanks”

Novice and Open Working Tests – 14 June 2026 held at Hy Fly

“Yesterday saw our 4th test of the season at Hy Fly, Lancashire, and the sun came out for us – infact, it was a bit too hot at times, but due to the constant rain lately, I don’t think we can moan too much about that.
We were there by very kind permission of The Holden Family. Thank you so much to Claire Holden and Trevor Holden who on Saturday morning also showed Mark Palmer, Andy Hall, Peter Thompson and Neil Whittaker around the ground, enabling them to set the well thought out tests, for the day after. Thank you guys.
Thanks very much to our fab judges who kindly gave up their day, Barry Cooper (A panel), Mick Kay, Peter Thompson and Steve Townsend. Hope you all enjoyed it.
As usual our wonderful committee turned out in force to help make the day run as smoothly as possible – Gary Collier, Mark Palmer, Kim Howlett, Leeanne Whitaker, Tracy Langstreth, Neil Whittaker, Julie Hunter, Franny Guatella, Robbie Gilmour, Laura Cooke and our Cheif Steward extraordinaire, Andy Hall. Also Christine Thompson for all she does.
Thanks also to everyone else who threw, placed dummies and stewarded for us as we couldn’t do it without you – Lisa Marson, Claire Holden, Georgie Holden, Steve Burns, Scott Marland, Louise Collier and Elaine Curran (aka Lady Bickerstaff lol). All of our helpers recieved either a bottle of wine or a dummy.
Last but certainly not least, thank you very much to our amazing sponsors, AK Gundog Accessories, Salubrious Dog Food with Neil Appleton Applebriar Gundogs, Mandy Berrisford of Red Hall Farm Gundog Training Ground and Ariat with distributor Malmo Guns who will provide the 1st place winners with a pair of Wellingtons.

Puppy, Novice and Open Working Tests – 16th May 2026 held at Red Hall Farm
“We travelled to Staffordshire yesterday to hold our 3rd working test of the season. The venue was the fabulous Red Hall Farm at Betley, by very kind permission of Mandy Berrisford.
The weather was a mixture of freezing cold and sunshine, but in the main the rain held off until after we’d finished.
The dogs were tested on water, blinds, marks and two dog walked ups over woodland, ponds, ploughed fields and meadow, and we saw some fabulous dog work.
As always, thanks to our wonderful committee who all pulled together to make the day run like clockwork – Mark Palmer, Gary Collier, Peter Thompson, Mick Kay, Julie Hunter, Andy Hall, Christine Thompson, Kim Howlett, Laura Cooke, Lee-Ann & Neil Whittaker, Franny Guatella, Tracy Langstreth and Robbie Gilmour.
Chief Steward was Andy Hall who does such an amazing job, bringing humour with clear instructions to competitors. He also runs around like the proverbial “Blue arsed Fly” all day, making sure things are running smoothly. Thanks Andy, we all really appreciate you.
Thank you to our judges who all did a fab job – Wayne Skett (A Panel), Gary Collier, Mark Palmer and Karen Parkinson.
We have amazing sponsors and our winners went home with an armful of gifts. Thank you so much to AK Gundog Accessories Ltd, Salubrious Dog foods via Neil Appleton Applebriar Gundogs, Ariat with Local distributor Malmo Guns and Mandy Berrisford of Red Hall Farm Gundog Training Ground.
We couldn’t hold our events without our “village” of helpers who throw dummies and place blinds. So big thanks along with our gratitude goes to Nicky Waddington, Ves Kirby, Roz Mcilroy, Nigel McIlroy, Louise Collier, James Handley, Mandy Berrisford and Mitch Bates. If I’ve missed anyone please let me know. We always like to give our helpers a gift of appreciation, and they chose between a dummy and a bottle of wine.
Our next event is a full training day (puppy, novice & open) at Red Hall Farm on the 31st of May. I will put a separate post on in a few days so that people can book on.”

Four Way Match Sunday 3rd May 2026 – Lazonby – Pennine Hosting
“What a fabulous day we had at the annual 4 way match up in Lazonby, Cumbria. I’m not sure how long it’s been running, but for people that don’t know, it’s a test between 4 clubs – Burns & Becks, Lancs & Merseyside, Pennine Training Area and Pilling Moss. There are 6 dogs per team – 2 puppies, 2 novice and 2 open and they all compete in 4 tests in their categories, followed by a team test, if time allows. Time did allow, and each team chose 1 puppy, 1 novice and 1 open. The pups had a mark, the novice a longer mark and the open, a long blind.
The weather started off quite wet but by the time we started it was fine, and remained fine for the duration no waterproofs required.
The day went like clockwork and I would personally like to thank our committee members who worked very hard to ensure that it did – Mark Palmer, Gary Collier, Mick Kay, Andy Hall, Kim Howlett , Lee-Ann & Neil Whittaker, Julie Hunter, Tracy Langstreth, Franny Guatella, Laura Cooke and Robbie Gilmour – sit down Christine Thompson but I bought them a drink in the pub afterwards and spent the budget.
We would like to thank the following judges:- Mark Palmer (Pennine), Polly Dunckley (Burns & Becks), Lisa Marson (Lancs & Mersey) and Mike Nelson (Pilling Moss) and the helpers that they brought with them.
Also big thanks goes out to The Lazonby Estate by kind permission of Nick Aubrey who arranged for us to be there. It’s a fabulous ground.
Thanks to our wonderful team for representing the club – Laila Curtis-Noonan & Steve Burns (puppy), Franny Guatella & Robbie Gilmour (novice) and Gary Collier & Scott Marland (open)
Unfortunately Pennine didn’t managed to retain the shield this year but huge congratulations go out to Pilling Moss, whose dogs ran extremely well. The camaraderie between the teams was great and I hope that everyone enjoyed the buffet that we put on. Thank you very much to Laila Curtis-Noonan who made the most amazing “Pennine Cake” and thanks also to Julie Flewitt and Gill Carter for baking lovely cakes for us
Next years 4 Way Match will be hosted by Burns & Becks.”

“Well, what can I say about Pennines first test of the season at Aston Hall near Runcorn? Other than it ran like clockwork and was such a fabulous well organised day.

Thank you to Andrew Talbot and Graham McPherson for allowing us to use this fab venue, which is a mixture of woodlands and meadow.
